The Mystery of Christ
The Bible presents us with a great mystery—that God should send His Son to die. Why?
Why would anyone willing choose to send his own son to death?
The answer is found in the Bible. First of all, we must understand who God is for this great mystery to make sense.
God is love, we often hear this on television, in movies, on the streets. But God is also
completely holy and just, which means that God cannot
look at anything that is wrong, and that He cannot simply overlook evil because He loves.
The Bible tells us, “all have sinned [done wrong] and come short of the glory of God.”
This is speaking of all humanity. Every person on the planet that ever has, does now, or ever will live has done wrong.
And since God is just, and holy, this causes a problem—He cannot look at us. Take a moment to examine yourself and realize this truth.
Have you ever told a lie (even a white lie), have you ever stolen anything, ever cheated on a test, ever disobeyed your
parents? Well, yes, you have, haven’t you? This means you have “fallen short” of God’s standard,
and this means that He cannot look at you.
Well, what does that mean? The next point is this: “The wages of sin is death.” That means that everyone who has ever sinned
(which means every person that has ever lived!) is deserving of death. This speaks both of the physical death,
and of the spiritual death (eternity in hell, total separation from what is good, total separation from God for ever).
That’s the bad news.
Now, for the mystery: the Good News. In His infinite wisdom and love, mercy and grace, God had a mysterious plan that could
bring about something called Salvation. This plan was the death, burial and resurrection of His Only Son
(who is God Himself). Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came to earth and took on human form—He had flesh and blood,
like us—and set aside His rights as God so that He could walk among us, and so that He could bring about this Salvation.
He lived a perfect life—never once doing wrong! He healed the sick, caused the blind to see, raised the dead and much more.
And then He was taken by the authorities for His teachings of righteousness and His claims to be
the Living God, and they crucified Him. The mystery is here: the very people that He came to save were the ones that
wanted to kill Him, yet He chose to die for them anyway. He willingly gave up His life to save the very people who nailed Him to the cross.
And God was satisfied with His sacrifice! But it did not end there—for Jesus rose again from the grave on the third day!
Over 500 people saw Him as He walked the earth for a period before ascending to Heaven where He lives today with the Father.
None of us can save himself. Only Jesus can do that—and that’s why He came.
And there is nothing we can do to earn this love, this salvation—we can only accept this Gift given freely to all who will take it.
But we must accept it. Much like a Christmas gift under the tree, it does not affect us unless we go, pick it up and unwrap it—accepting it
simply as a gift for us to have.
Jesus wants to be your Savior, and He wants to be your Lord.
Accept His gift and repent (which literally means to change direction).
Take His Gift of Salvation, and it is yours. Then, serve Him.
There is no greater mystery than this:
that God should send His Only Son to die for us—and that He would give us this salvation freely.
